Race & Advertising

As a byproduct of the Civil Rights era, there was an increase in black representation in advertisements. When looking at these vintage ads, I realized that a lot of these images being portrayed are pretty stereotypical. I went into different publications to compare ads that sell the same things but are marketed to different groups.

Being a black male, representation in media is important to me. I wanted to unpack these images we are displayed daily and lay them in front of people who would otherwise not think twice about them.

As an extension of my research on representation in print advertisements, I made a similar piece but with commercials from the 60’s and 70’s.
